wallpapered drawer linings

You may remember that I was quite delighted to have won this chest of drawers/bedside table on ebay awhile back. Well, she is now pride of place in the guest bedroom and we gave our make-do (for the last 8 years make-do, mind you) bedside tables the heave ho.

I was very impressed with the wall Viv wallpapered in her study last week. Have you seen it, it looks amazing! I have been a little scared of wallpapering anything myself but I thought why not take baby steps and line some drawers with some wallpaper? I had a few wallpaper offcuts lying around so I chose a white-on-white wallpaper for the drawers of my little danish bedside table. I googled wallpaper paste on Saturday and found a recipe using ingredients I had at home (flour, salt, tea tree oil, water), and cooked it up on the cooktop.  Seriously, I felt like Martha Stewart.

On Sunday I cut the wallpaper to suit the drawers and glued them into place. Instant fresh new look drawers. The effect is quite subtle and I like that you would have no idea that the drawers are so pretty inside. It's a nice surprise isn't it? I guess this idea would work with any paper, even wrapping paper or fabric maybe. I imagine you could use spray adhesive if you didn't want to go all out with the glue-making. Must admit I have more wallpaper paste than I could ever need, left over. Taking up space in my fridge. Might need to dream up more little projects to use it up!

On a totally unrelated note, if you have thing for scented candles you should try this one, Voluspa - Goji & Torocco Orange (the one in the pretty red tin on my bedside table). It was my first ever expensive candle purchase and it is so yummy I could eat it! A really rich, fruity scent.

  2. Beautiful! Thank you so much for the link love. The florence paper looks lovely in your drawers. This is one of my favourite prints. And well done on mixing up your own wallpaper paste!

Speaking of florence broadhurst, I was actually inspired by your lamp re-do and I picked up some fabric from signature prints to cover an old lamp and my bentwood chairs over the weekend. I'll write about how it went tonight. I used spray adhesive but I don't think I used enough and the bits that fold over haven't stuck down very well. How has your lamp held up?

  3. Anita - Thank you! I had the table sent up from Melbourne - where all the good stuff is.

    Viv - You're very welcome!
I'm so excited you gave the lamp shade making a go! I have had a little bit of trouble with the part that folds over the frame at the top and bottom, is that the where you mean? I fold it back over every now and again and it tends to stay put for awhile. I've been meaning to give it another spray with spray adhesive. The adhesive I used was one that was removable and I think that may be the problem. I'm thinking of buying an adhesive that isn't removable and see it if works better.
Can't wait to see what you have done with you lamp and chairs.

  8. Great work! I love that you have practised inside the drawer first and that you mixed up your own eco-friendly paste. And of course I love the gorgeous cushion on the bed :) x

Lauren - Thank you! How lovely of you to say so. I just had a look at your blog - your illustrations are amazing Lauren!!

Thea - I thought you might like the cushion - it looks great with the red and white doesn't it

  10. Julie - yes that's right, that's the part I had trouble with. I'll give it another go using more spray adhesive or craft glue.

Any chance you can share your eco-friendly wallpaper paste recipe? Curious to know how it holds up too.

Love all the mid century furniture you are collecting for your home!

  11. Viv - I found the wallpaper paste recipe here:

    http://good.net.nz/blog/sarah-heeringa/how-to-make-your-own-wallpaper-paste

The link has been added above in the post. I particularly liked this recipe as it was quite flexible in what ingredients you can use. The paste has held up perfectly, a really great bond, no bubbles. How it compares to professional paste I don't know as I haven't used one before, I found mine to be quite 'grippy' and a thick consistency but it does roll on really easily. I'm not sure how easily you could reposition the paper on a wall - perhaps a thinner mixture with more water added would work. I used cornflour as it is a smoother texture to plain flour and just one tip - when stirring the mixture it seems to take quite a long time to thicken. Once it does start to thicken it does so in a matter of seconds so I would take it off the heat straight away and stir. I found it made a lot more than one cup of paste also.

    Good luck!

  18. Hi Julie, thanks for your comment on my blog. The lime 'Circles and Squares' was a special order apparantly, I asked if there was any more. Unfortunately not, because it was what was left over from the job. The red 'Fingers' (cushions) was the same, a special order. David & Helen Lennie from Signature Prints are such lovely people to deal with, and so are their staff...Terese
